- its indicative of a loss of proprioception, that occurs with posterior lesions in the spinal cord and peripheral neuropathy

- when the patient is able to stand with eyes open, but demonstrates significant increase in sway/ instability with eyes closed

1. feet are placed in tandem; with EO and EC condition Imposed.

1. patient is instructed to stand w feet together 2. eyes open and unaided for 20 - 30 sec 3. then patent is asked to stand w eyes closed to 20-30 sec

it refers to the ratio of body sway during EO and EC conditions. - it can be used as a measure of stability
