Why students should use rubrics:

•Students can use rubrics as explicit guides to understand how they will be evaluated and what the teacher expects. •Students can use them as tools to develop their own abilities.

Why teachers use rubrics?

•Teachers may reuse the rubrics for a variety of activities. •Teachers can increase the quality of their direct instruction by providing focus, emphasis and attention to particular details as a model for students. •Rubrics help grading be more objective.

A good rubric should...

1. Address all relevant content and performance objectives. 2. Define standards & provide criteria for students to evaluate their own work. 3. Be easy to use and understand. 4. Be applicable to a variety of tasks. 5. Provide all students with an opportunity to succeed at some level. 6. Yield consistent results, even when administered by different scorers.

3 types of rubrics

1. analytic 2. holistic 3, single point

Analytic Rubrics

•Analyze each individual aspect of the project. •Points are given on each aspect. •Points from all the aspects are added together.

What is a rubric?

•A set of criteria and a scoring scale that is used to assess and evaluate student's work.

Single Point Rubric

•Is similar to analytic rubrics, because it breaks down the components of an assignment into different criteria. •It ONLY describes the criteria for proficiency. The student would aim for proficiency, however, would show if they fall short OR if they go above expectations.

Holistic Rubrics

•Look at the project as a whole, not broken into pieces. •Can be labeled with numbers, letters or words. •Many teachers have a stamp created, allowing them to stamp the paper and then simple circle the score or other details.
