What is Canaliculi?

Canalculi are the spaces that connect lacunae with one another and, eventually, with the central canal

Structure of Compact Bone

Haversian system:(1. Lamellae 2. Lacunae 3. Canalculi) 4. Central (Haversian) Canals 5. Perforating (Volkmann's Canals

Differences of Spongy Bone to Compact Bone

In contrast to compact bone, spongy bone does not contain osteon.

What is lacunae?

Lacunae are small spaces between the lamellae, which contain osteocytes

Parts of the Haversian System

Lamellae Lacunae Canaliculi

Structure of Spongy Bone

Spongy bone consists of irregular, thin plates of bone, called trabeculae. The spaces between the trabeculae are filled with red marrow, which produce blood (all blood cells are produced in bone marrow)

What is the function of central (haversian) canals?

The central canals run longitudinally through the bone, that contains one or more blood vessels that supply the osteon

What does the Haversian system/ osteon do?

The haversian system/osteon is a structural unit in which many units are cemented together in order to form the substance of compact bone

What is lamellae?

The lamellae of each osteon are cylindrical and are aligned parallel to the long axis of the central canal (a ring of hard, calcified matrix)

What is the function of the perforating (volksmann's) canals?

The perforating canals run at right angles to the long axis of the bone. Blood vessels in these canals deliver blood to the osteon deeper in the bone and supply the interior marrow cavity

What is the structural unit of compact bone called?

The structural unit of compact bone is called the osteon or that Haversian system
