The Sun's Atmosphere
Core
Center and hottest part of the sun. Makes up about 10 percent of the suns diameter.
Sun Spots
Dark, cool area on the Sun's surface. They do not shine as brightly as the areas around them. Sunspots can last for days or even months.
Solar Flare
Eruption of electrically charged particles from the surface of the sun. They can cause electrical outages when they reach the earths surface.
Chromosphere
Layer of the sun's atmosphere above the photosphere. It is usually only visible during a solar eclipse.
Corona
Outer layer of the sun's atmosphere. Like the chromosphere, it is usually only visible during a solar eclipse. Together with the chromosphere, it constitutes the sun's outer atmosphere.
Prominence
Stream of gas that shoots high above the Sun's surface. Usually form in the chromosphere or photosphere.
Photosphere
The inner layer of the sun's atmosphere. The visible surface of the sun. It glows and gives off light
