Summary

Three Iowa students, Mary Beth Tinker, her brother, and his friend were suspended by school officials for wearing black arm bands to school to protest the Vietnam War. Tinker v Des Moines Independent School District. The school was already anticipating the protest because the newspaper had published an article about it, so they banned them. Mary Beth , her brother, and his friend all were them the next day and the day after. All three were suspended until they agreed not to wear the arm band to school. Students took the school district to court for violating their First Amendment Rights.
