Condyloid or Ellipsoid Joint

Allows for hinge type movement in two directions, Ex. joints that connect fingers with palm and toes with soles of feet.

Gliding Joint

Permits a sliding motion of one bone over another, Ex. found at ends of collar bones, between wrist bones, between ankle bones.

Hinged Joints

Permits back and forth motion, Ex. knee= flex and extend, shoulder= forward and backward

Ball and Socket Joints

Permits circular movement, widest range of movement Ex. Shoulder joint

Saddle Jount

Permits movement in two planes Ex. Base of thumb

Pivot Joint

Permits rotation of one bone around another, Ex. elbow= turn hand over
