Objective 2: Write and interpret the chemical formula for photosynthesis. Label the reactants and products.

EQUATION: 6CO2 +6H2O --> C6 H12 O6 + 6O2 REACTANTS: INGREDIANTS -CO2 (carbon dioxide) and H2O (water) PRODUCTS: Results -C6 H12 O6 (glucose) and O2 (oxygen)

Objective 1: Explain where all energy on Earth comes from and the overall processes it goes through to be in a usable form of ATP for consumers like us.

Energy on Earth comes from the sun which is the ultimate source of energy. The process it has to go through to be in a usable form of ATP for consumers like us is Photosynthesis. Plants go through photosynthesis, consumers eat those plants and producers and go through cellular respiration.

Objective 3: Describe the significant events of the light-dependent reaction (ETC). Include which reactants and products are involved. Highlight what will be released as a product and what will move on to the second stage. Be sure to include where the process occurs in the chloroplast.

Light independent reaction ("Photo") reaction requires solar energy. AKA the election transport chain (or light rxn) Purpose: capture energy from the sun and store energy in "energy-carrying molecules" (ATP and NADPH) Location: occurs in the grana (thylakoid membrane) where the chlorophyll is stored (Chlorophyll is the pigment that captures sunlight) Summing it all up: energy from the sun is passed down the electron transport chain and is stored in the bonds of ATP and NADPH. Water molecules are split into hydrogen and oxygen. -oxygen is released as a waste product. -ATP, NADPH and hydrogen (H+) leave the grana and go into the storm for the next stage.

Objective 4: Describe the significant events of the light-dependent reaction (Calvin cycle). Include which reactants and products are involved. Highlight what will be released as a product and what will move on to continue in the cycle. Beside to include where the process occurs in the chloroplast.

Light-Independent Reaction- "synthesis" reaction does not require any solar energy AKA the Calvin cycle (or dark rxn) Purpose: use the energy from the "energy-carrying molecules" from the light-dependent reaction to make sugar (glucose). Location: Occurs in the stroma Summary:Calvin-Cycle Chemical reactions powered by ATP and NADPH combine H+ (from water) with CO2 to form sugar molecules (glucose=C6 H12 O6) -Uses CO2 (and H+ from water) and makes glucose

VOCAB: Grana

Pancake-like stacks of thylakoid membrane

VOCAB: Photosynthesis

The overall process by which sunlight (solar/light energy) chemically converts water and carbon dioxide into chemical energy stored in glucose (a sugar/carbohydrate) (this happens on the leaf of a plant)

VOCAB: Stroma

fluid-like substance that fills the space between the grana
