What are the 3 layers of the uterus?
1. Endometrium 2. Myometrium 3. Perimetrium
What are the 2 functions of the uterine tubes?
1. Extensions of uterus communicate loosely with ovaries; transport channel for ova 2. Site of fertilization; blocking either end of both tubes causes infertility
What are the 3 divisions of the uterine tubes?
1. Isthmus 2. Ampulla 3. Infundibulum
What are the 3 layers of the uterine tubes?
1. Mucous membrane lining 2. Smooth muscle layer 3. Serosa layer (connective tissue)
What are the 4 functions of the uterus?
1. Part of female reproductive tract; site of conception 2. Site of implantation; source of nutrition for implanted embryo; secretions from endometrial glands (uterine milk) provide nutrition until placenta develops 3. Myometrial contractions expel fetus at end of gestation 4. Menstruation - shedding of endometrium
What are the 3 sub layers of the endometrium?
1. Stratum Compactum 2. Stratum Spongiosum 3. Stratum Basale
How many layers does the myometrium have?
3 layers
What is the blood supply to the uterus?
A lot of blood supply from the uterine arteries. Uterine arteries are branches of internal iliac arteries. Blood vessels from ovarian and vaginal arteries anastomose with uterine arteries. Uterine, ovarian, and vaginal veins return blood to internal iliac vein. Need a lot of blood supply so we can provide nutrients and carry away waste products in order to develop a healthy baby.
Why is menstruation important?
A new lining is better when supporting an embryo
The position of the uterus changes with what?
Age, pregnancy, and distention (swollen) of the pelvis viscera
What are the uterine tubes?
Also called fallopian tubes, they carry an ova from the ovary to the uterus
What portion of the uterine tube is dilated and intermediate?
Ampulla
What part of the uterus is the wider portion?
Body

Mucus
Which layer of the uterus is the thickest?
Myometrium
Where is the internal os located?
Opens into cervical canal and entering the cervix
What is the outermost layer of the uterus?
