Dissent

Definition: Verb. to object or oppose, not to approve Noun. a difference of opinion, protest Context Clue Sentence: While in South Africa, Gandhi edited a weekly newspaper, Indian Opinion, in which he encouraged Indians to stand up and protest their mistreatment. He felt that dissent was necessary to advance needed reforms.

Mannerism

Definition: a distinctive personal trait; an idiosyncrasy; an exaggerated or unnatural style or habit, as in speech or dress Context Clue Sentence: In the face of threats, Gandhi had a distinctive personal trait, or mannerism, that probably upset South African authorities--namely, his peaceful and calm attitude. When beaten, Gandhi employed a policy of passive resistance

Ultimatum

Definition: a final demand or proposition Context Clue Sentence: Gandhi's response to South African ultimatums that he stop protesting injustice was the same response he would give to similar demands from British authorities in India. Gandhi was not afraid of force or punishment and was willing to resist demands that he discontinue his actions.

Clemency

Definition: a lenient or merciful act; mildness, as of weather Context Clue Sentence: As a successful lawyer in South Africa for twenty years, Gandhi was concerned with the unfair treatment of Indians in that country. In trials, he hoped judges would be lenient and show clemency for his clients.

Pacifist

Definition: a person opposed to force as a way of settling disputes; one who refuses to bear arms or use weapons in war Context Clue Sentence: A pacifist, Gandhi based his nonviolent resistance technique upon the principles of nonviolence, courage, and truth. Later, he used this technique in his involvement in India's independence movement.

Meticulous

Definition: extremely careful; overly precise or fussy about details Context Clue Sentence: Born into a middle-class Indian family, Gandhi studied law at University College in London. As a young lawyer in South Africa, he was probably meticulous, being extremely careful with the details of each case.

Submission

Definition: obedience; humbleness Context Clue Sentence: For years the South African government resisted submission to Gandhi's requests for social reforms but finally gave in on several important points, such as recognizing Indian marriages.

Mandatory

Definition: required; obligatory Context Clue Sentence: It certainly was not a mandatory part of Gandhi's legal duties in South Africa to protest social discrimination. His actions were voluntary--and sometimes they landed him in jail.

Inhibition

Definition: the act of holding back; an inner belief, feeling, or force that checks one's actions, thoughts, or feelings Context Clue Sentence: Partly because of his own natural inhibition about responding violently to injustice, Gandhi developed and used his nonviolent resistance technique in South Africa.

Protocol

Definition: the code prescribing formal etiquette (behavior) and precedence for official ceremonies and dealings, as with diplomats and the military; an original draft or record of a negotiation or document Context Clue Sentence: : While in college, Gandhi may have learned English protocol, but in South Africa he had no occasion to use the code of formal etiquette used in official ceremonies and dealings.
