What was invented to allow for Mass Publishing?

- Printing press and movable type

What are the 4 aspects of Information Quality?

- Timeliness - Location - Form - Validity

Trend 4: Information "Everywhere" (Mobile and Internet)

- access information whenever and wherever - internet and World Wide Web (WWW) - mobile devices

Information and Communication

- are inseparable - communication is meaningless without information and information is useless if not communicated

Trend 2: Mechanical (Digital) Storage/Retrieve

- bigger, faster, better - digital/universal computing - Alan Turing - early computers (Colossus, ENIAC, CSIRAC) took in data, processed it and decoded it

Information Quality: Validity

- closely related to form - is the information credible? - what checks/quality control have been performed? - are the facts correct

Interests of Information Science (3)

- collecting, structuring, storing and retrieving information - communicating information using various techniques - using information to make strategic decisions

Trend 3: Smaller, Lighter, Available

- devices (personal computing/desktop computers) - do it yourself instead of going to the computing department E.g. IBM PC - increased storage e.g. Oxford Dictionary on CD-Rom

Trend 5: Information Overload

- information becomes cheaper to produce and store over time - therefore the desire to generate information increases and MORE information is produced = information becomes expensive and more valuable

Information Quality: Timeliness

- is information available when needed? - does the information accurately reflect the time period being considered?

Information Quality: Form

- is the information appropriately presented? e.g. graph vs text vs audio - is it error-free

Information Quality: Location

- is the information easily accessed? - although location shouldn't matter due to modern technology

Trend 1: Mobility

- manuscripts (codices, scrolls, vellum, Papyrus) - handwritten - often contained errors - costly, especially to duplicate

Information (3)

- processed and contextualised data - meaningful - has meaning and we can make inferences e.g. 135 cm

Data (3)

- raw facts - no context - meaningless e.g. 20

What are the 5 trends of ICT?

1. Mobility 2. Mechanical (Digital) Storage/Retrieval 3. Smaller, lighter, available 4. Information "Everywhere" (Mobile and Internet) 5. Information Overload

CIO

Chief Information Officer

Why were the Printing Press and movable Type invented?

In order to duplicate information quickly and cheaply and to allow for Mass Publishing BUT there was still a lot of labour required

ICT

Information Communication Technology Tools that permit the recording and processing of data to produce information for inspection and transmission/communication

Information Cost/Production Paradox

Over time, information becomes cheaper to produce and store, THEREFORE the volume of information produced increases and information becomes more expensive and valuable SEE GRAPHS!

What was the start of ICT?

Rock art, writing on walls at the beginning of human society

GIGO

garbage in, garbage out

There is and always has been a need for...

information and for it to be captured

Information Science

the study of information and its role within organisations
