Imperialism

A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.

Allied Powers

Nations allied against the Central Powers during WWI. It consisted of Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the United States along with 20 other nations.

League of Nations

The League of Nations was an international organization, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, created after the First World War to provide a forum for resolving international disputes. It was first proposed by President Woodrow Wilson as part of his Fourteen Points plan for an equitable peace in Europe, but the United States was never a member.

Isolationism

a policy of remaining apart from the affairs or interests of other groups, especially the political affairs of other countries.

Alliance System

a system of formal agreements or treaties between two or more nations to cooperate for specific purposes.

World War I

also known as the First World War or the Great War, was a global war centered in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. It was fought between the Allies and the Central Powers.

Central Powers

consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria - hence also known as the Quadruple Alliance - was one of the two main factions during World War I (1914-18). It faced and was defeated by the Allied Powers.

Treaty of Versailles

one of the peace treaties at the end of World War I. It ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers.

Militarism

the belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests.

Nationalism

the policy or doctrine of asserting the interests of one's own nation viewed as separate from the interests of other nations or the common interests of all nations
