Tragedy

A type of drama or literature that shows the downfall or destruction of a noble or outstanding person.

Satire

A type of writing that ridicules or criticizes the faults or individuals or groups.

Rising Action

All the events of the plot that come before the climax.

Tragic Flaw

A character has a weakness which accounts for his or her fall.

Suspense

A feeling of growing curiosity or anxious uncertainty about the outcome of events in a literary work.

Simile

A figure of speech that makes a direct comparison between two subjects using LIKE or AS.

Sonnet

A fourteen-line lyric poem focused on a single theme.

Stanza

A group of lines in a poem, considered a unit.

Soliloquy

A long speech made by a character who is along revealing his or her private thoughts and feelings to the audience.

Third-Person Point of View

The narrator reveals the feelings of one character's inner thoughts and is not himself a character in the story.

Theme

Is a central idea, concern, or purpose in a literary work.

Symbol

Is anything that stands for or represents something else. A symbol can be conventional (widely known) or personal.

Setting

The time and place of the action. Provided the location and background for the characters and plot, and may help create a particular atmosphere or mood.

Tone

The writer's attitude toward the readers and toward the subject.

Verbal Irony

Words are used to suggest the opposite of their usual meaning.
