-1922. Architect: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe -only plan and elevation, the building was never built -series of lines and floating planes to define space -de-stijl -low and spread out -pin wheel plan -simple
AEG Turbine Factory
1908-9 Berlin, Germany Architect: Peter Behrens Patron: A.E.G. Company -First European building up the the same level as the American buildings at this time -Monumental factory, roof line representing the crane line behind it -brings great amount of light -Sprayed cement on outside covers staircase on inside, slightly battered, horizontal line, ornamentation -great steel beams, almost like columns -hinged beams at the bottom f the building, to it can respond to changes in temperature -getting away from most decorative effects -rehabilitated to something else -extended down the street -"temple industry" -revolutionary -horizontal line ornament -palladinal pediment -Egyptian temple like essence -attracted young architects such as Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, etc.
Model Factory
1914 Cologne, Germany Architect: Walter Gropius & Adolf Meyer -Werkbund Exposition -Administration building for the factory -divided narrow piers -extensive use of glass and glazing -cantilevered out a little to make the upper part look like it's floating -hovering open space -can see completely inside of space -using glass in a curtain wall -displayed the circulation on inside -elegant, very composed, monumentality, balance, etc. -similar to Wright's design -horizontal lines -symmetrical -spiral staircase amde of thin concrete -exposing metal
Monument to the Third International project
1919-20 Architect: Vladimir Tatlin -A design for a grand monumental building. -meant for Saint Pettersburg -scheme for a great conference on international communistic -was going to be built in the USSR -entirely political statement -spiral, almost like double helix -tilted, trajectory that is proposed within it -suspended in this model would be 4 glass volumes, of different geometric shapes, all rotate at different patterns -different parts of the government housed within each part -idea of revolution turning, and a monument to change -celebration of new way of government -proposed to be made of steel and painted red (symbolizes communism) -meant to be "cathedral of socialism" -1200-2000 ft tall, not practical -He doesn't describe how to build it -Very publicized
Glass Skyscraper Project
1922-1923 Architect: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe -Modernism, but expressionist -prophetic designs -he will publish these -took curtain wall construction to the extreme: all glass skyscrapers -unbuildable at this time
USSR Pavilion
1925 Paris, France Architect: Konstantin Melnikov -Paris Arts Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs -Metal -Internal staircase, goes up the sides of too pavilions -movement in design/ dynamism -represents USSR as dynamic and rapidly evolving nation -exposed structure -far more modern displayed inside, like tobacco and etc.
Bauhaus
1925-26 Dessau, Germany. Architects: Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer. Patron: Dessau government -Pinwheel plan -Auditorium, cafeteria, studios, dorms -Flat slabs -Influence of de stijl -Floating -Recessed ground floor level -Super graphics saying BAUHAUS -Huge windows = problem with insulation -Each student has their own dorm room and has a small balcony -Concrete and metal -A street runs through the connecting structure that is the administration wing -Each floor has its own distinct color -Gropius served as the head of the school -School buildings, and master houses(duplexes) -greatly damaged in WWII, all have since been restored -1928 Gropius resigns
