Sifter
A canister with a blade or ring inside that forces dry ingredients through a wire screen at the bottom to make finer particles
Strainer
A device that holes punched in it so solid can get separated form liquid
Baking pan
A flat pan that has straight sides; used to bake foods in the oven
Slotted Spoon
A large spoon with holes for draining liquid from food
Pizza pan
A metal circular pan used for cooking pizza's
Range
A stove with multiple cooking surfaces
Deep fry thermometer
A thermometer used to measure the temperature of sugar
Rubber spatula
A wooden handle attached to a rubber head used to scrape the bowl when cooking
Cooling Rack
Allows air to circulate freely to cool baked goods
Muffin pan
Also called tins; different sizes holds 6-12 muffins or cupcakes at a time
Microwave oven
An oven that uses microwaves to cook or heat foods
Wok
Bowl shaped frying pan
Colander
Bowl shaped kitchen untensil with holes used to strain liquid off of food
Toaster
Browns breads and pastries on both sides at the same time; two and four slices models are available
Blender
Chops, blends, and liquefies foods; various speeds are used for different food preparation tasks

Come in 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup, 1/2
Measuring spoons
Come in sets of 4 or 5; standard set have 4 sizes:1/4-tsp, 1/2-tsp,1-tsp metric systems have 5 sizes: 1-mL, 2-mL, 5-mL, 15-mL,25-mL
Double boiler
Consists of a small saucepan that fits into a larger one plus a lid; simmering water in the bottom pan gently heats food in the pan above; used for chocolate, sauces, cereals
Slow cooker
Cooks food slowly for hours; deep pot has a heating element in the base and conveniently cooks one dish meals
Steamer
Covered sauce pan with an insert that holds food over a small amount of boiling water
Loaf pan
Deep narrow rectangular pan for baking loaves of bread or meat
Cookie sheet
Flat rectangular pan with two or three open sides to cook cookies and biscuits
Pastry Brush
For brushing a sauce on hot foods or a glaze on pastry
Electric skillet/griddle
Fries, roasts, steams, and bakes; thermostatic temperature control
Tongs
Grip and lift bulky foods such as broccoli spears
Bread Knife
Has a serrated or saw tooth blade for slicing bread
Vegetable peeler/parer
Has a swivel blade; used to pare fruits and vegetables
Saucepan
Have one long handle and sometimes a small handle on the opposite side and many have a lid; usually made with metal or heat proof glass; sizes normally range from 1/2 quart-4 quarts
Dutch oven
Heavy pot with a close fitting kid; suitable for range or oven
Roasting Pan
Large heavy oval or rectangular pans; used for roasting meats and whole poultry
Slicing Knife
Large knife used for meat and poultry
Chefs french knife
Large triangular blade is ideal for slicing, chopping, and dicing
Pot
Larger and heavier than saucepans, range in size from 3-20 quarts and have 2 small handles on the opposite side
Pastry Blender
Mix hard fat into flour in order to make pastries
Toaster oven
Mostly heats or bakes small amounts of food; some can broil

Food chopper
Ranges in size from small handheld nut choppers to a large model with several blades
Grater/Shredder
Reduces food into finer particles

Oven
Thermally insulated chamber used for heating, baking, or drying substances
Liquid measuring cups
Transparent cups with measurements marked on the side,typically in fluid ounces and fractions of a cup millimeters
Casserole
Used for baking and serving main dishes and desserts; vvarious sizes are available with or without lids
Saute pan/Skillet
Used for browning and frying pans; vary in sizes often having matching lids; also called frying pans
Meat thermometer
Used to measure the internal temperature of meat
Wire Whisk
Usually a balloon shaped instructment made of wire loops that are held together by a handle; used for stirring, beating, and, whipping
Cake pan
Usually round or square from 8 to 10 inches in diameter; novelty shapes range from horseshoe to cartoon characters
Hand mixer
a manual utensil that has a set of beaters attached to a gear mechanism to rotate the blades of the beaters
Turner
lifts and turns flat foods such as pancakes on a griddle or cookies on a cookie sheet
