2.1.3 Define the terms; pulmonary ventilation, total lung capacity (TLC), vital capacity (VC), tidal volume (TV), expiratory reserve volume (ERV), inspiratory reserve volume (IRV) and residual volume (RV)

Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV)

The additional air which can be forcibly inhaled after the inspiration of a normal tidal volume

Respiratory volume

The amount of air inhaled and stored in the lungs at any given time

Vital Capacity (VC)

The highest amount of air which can be expelled from the lungs after taking the biggest breath without residual volume

Total Lung Capacity (TLC)

The inspirational capacity plus the residual capacity of air in the lungs at the end of maximal inspiration

Pulmonary Ventilation

The total number of gas (per minute) which is inspired.

Residual Volume (RV)

The volume of air which is still in the lungs after the most forcible expiration possible

Tidal Volume (TV)

Amount of air which enters in the lungs during normal inhalation or expiration at rest

Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV)

Amount of air, which can be expelled from the lungs during exhalation at normal resting rate
