Should Set a Vision and Continually Reaffirm It
A leader's vision must be consistent with the org's core values and the core values of org's of larger units under which it falls. No org will thrive if relationships in the org suffer. Leadership without management is vision without fulfillment. Focus on opportunities, not problems.
Should be Creative Thinkers
Brainstorming - a group of people working on a solution. capturing ideas so they can be used later (sketchbooks and journals). Dont listen to naysayers.
Should Persuade, Not Manipulate
Build goodwill and trust over time, identify with followers, move graduatlly towrard disagreements, when they full agree with you, don't waste no more words
Should Deal Effectively with Difficult People
Decide if you want to change them or deal with them. Some will not respond to efforts to get along with them. Don't let their bad habits/vibes rub off on you. People may blame you for their problems. Maybe you are the difficult person.
Should be Movitated
Desire, Determine, Decide, Discipline, Direct
Should Persevere
Don't quit when things go wrong, as they sometimes will, when the road you're trudgin seems al uphill. You never can tell how close you are, it may be near when it seems so far."
Should Master Public Speaking
Focus on the audience, not you. Organize main points so they support your objective. Choose supporting material that speaks to your audience. Choose language audience gets. Practice.
Should be Change Agents
Followers must understand the reason or purpose change is needed. Purposes for change may be abstract; people need a picture of how things will be after the change. Most people need to understand the plan that will get them to the destination. People who help implement the change will support the change and commit to helping make it happen.
Should Deomonstrate Balance
Intellectual Development- must be learners and grasp new concepts, deal with new ideas. read, think, write, speak, listen Emotional Intelligence - posses the ability and skill to manage emotions and those of who they lead. must 1st know yourself, and then know others in order to lead. Physical Conditioning - leaders must take care of themselves if they wish to lead and take care of others. Spiritual Well Being - will help leader discover what in life is most important
Should Promote Consensus
Keep the group focused on the problem. Attend to the process as well as the product. Seek different views. Remain open to different views. Use group pronouns.
Should Be Readers
Lets people stay up to date. Helps develop a healthy self-image. Helps leaders advance (reports, memos, emails). Imagination and creativity. Power of written ideas is foundational to democracy (illiterate people are easier to manipulate)
Should Focus on the Mission First and People Always
Misson-Only leadership - no communication People-Only leadership - nothing gets done Dual-Focused leadership - willingness to adapt to individual's needs but expect the individual to get the job done

Should Delegate Effectively
Selet the right person for the task. Make the objective and standards of performance clear. Assign needed authority and support. Don't micromanage but be available. Give honest feedback and praise good work.
Should Sharpen Their Writing Skills
anyone can do it. clear writing reflects clear thinking. its a key leadership tool. enhances confidence. there is no exucuse for not writing well.
Should have a Moral Compass
based on values, ethics, and morals. Honesty and Integrity - linked to moral character. "doing the right thing when no one is watching", consistency in actions, freedom from hypocrisy, being what you say you are, showing strong character, and acting to your values, beliefs, and principles.
Should Set the Example
be energetic, not lazy. demonstrate the traits they value in followers. setting the example doesn't mean you have to be able to do the job as well as others.
Should Build Collaborative Teams and Coalitions
coalitions must be built across organizations. you can learn from sports teams. create a cliate of collaboration: requires trust which depends upon honest, consistency, and respect. you must set examples and stree the importance of diversity in collaboration.
Should Be Encouragers, Not Criticizers
encouraging builds relationships and allows you to think more positively.
Should Attend to Nonverabl Cues
eye contact, body language, gestures/facial expressions. Personal appereance. Vocal tones influences attitude.
Should Let people Know they Care
face-to-face interaction, notes, emails, and just saying "thank you" for a job well done or a good effort go a long way to building morale, satisfaction, and productivity.
Should be Servants
leads when it is the best way to serve others and the org. you put your primary motivation to lead so you can make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Should be Learners
must learn from own successes and mistakes.
Should Build Trust
there are no small lies. can come back to haunt you. one lie breeds another. dishonesty will find you out. restoring broken trust is hard.
Should be Listeners
to improve relationships. it builds respect and trust and shows that you care about others. it gets you info. Listening helps them understand what is happening around them and helps them understand others.
Should Know How to Follow
understand your followers. model behavior after good leaders. give credit to others. take blame and everyone wins.
