A&P 1: Body Cavities

Vertebral cavity or spinal cavity

found in the vertebral column and protects the spinal cord.

pericardial membranes

membranes that surround the heart

pericardial cavity

(within mediastinum) contains the heart

dorsal cavity

Back. contains the brain and spinal cord

Posterior body cavity

Consists of the cranial and spinal cavity; protects the structures of the nervous system; also called dorsal body cavity

peritoneal membrane

Larger. the serous membrane that lines the walls of the abdominal cavity. Lie behind

anterior body cavity

consists of the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic cavities; protects the internal organs, mediastinum; also called ventral body cavity.

mediastium

house the heart, great blood vessels, trachea and esophagus.

Venteral Cavity

located toward the front of the body. it is made up of the thoracic cavity, and the abdominopelvic cavity

Cranial cavity

located within the skull, surrounds and protects the brain

Serious membrane

produces a watery fluid and lines closed body cavities; parietal lines the outer part and visceral lines the inner. reduces friction inside body.

Peritoneal cavity

space between the parietal and visceral peritoneum. Contains digestive system, reproductive and urinary system.

abdominal cavity

spans the area from the diaphragm to the body pelvis. contains the stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, kidneys, and most of the small and large intestines

pleural cavity

surrounds the lungs, located in the serious membranes.

Thoracic cavity

the division of the body cavity that lies above the diaphragm. Contains heart and lungs. 3 cavities in the thoracic cavities are: Pleural, mediastinum, pericardial cavity.

pleural membranes/cavity

two membranes surround the lungs consist of parietal pleura outside the thoracic wall and the visceral pleura running along the surfaces of the lungs.
