Canal
An opening not through a bone, but made from other bones stacking on top of each other. Ex. Vertebra
Sinus
• Definition: Cavity within a bone • Ex. Frontal sinus of frontal bone
Head
• Definition: Enlargement on the end of a bone. • Ex. Head of humerus
Tuberosity
• Definition: Knoblike process usually larger than a tubercle. • Ex. Radial tuberosity of radius
Crest
• Definition: Narrow, ridgelike projection. • Ex. Lilac crest of illum
Foramen
• Definition: Opening through a bone that usually is a passageway for blood vessels, nerves, or ligaments. • Ex. Foramen magnum of occipital bone
Epicondyle
• Definition: Projection situation above a condyle • Ex. Medial epicondyle of humerus
Process
• Definition: Prominent projection on a bone. Extends off a bone. • Ex. Mastoid process of temporal bone
Fossa (larger)
• Definition: Relatively deep pit or depression. Looks to receive another bone. Dish like depression. • Ex. Olecranon fossa of humerus.
Trochanter
• Definition: Relatively large process. • Ex. Greater trochanter of femur
Condyle
• Definition: Rounded process that usually articulates with another bone. • Ex. Occipital bone
Tubercle (smaller)
• Definition: Small, knoblike process. • Ex. Greater tubercle of humerus
Facet (smaller)
• Definition: Small, nearly flat surface. Dish like depressions. • Ex. Rib face of thoracic vertebra.
Fissure
• Definition: The deep grooves in the surface of the cerebrum.
Spine
• Thornlike projection • Spine of scapula
Neck
Where the head rounds off.
