Air Pollution and Acid Rain
Carbon Monoxide is a poisonous Gas
1) Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas. 2) Carbon monoxide is formed when petrol or diesel in car engines is burnt without enough oxygen this is incomplete combustion
It's Important that Air Pollution is controlled
1) The build-up of all these pollutants can make unhealthy and miserable for many people 2) For example, there are a lot more people with breathing illnesses like asthma now. 3) Many people blame air pollution for this 4) For example, having catalytic converters in motor vehicles reduces the amount of carbon monoxide coming out of the exhausts. They do this by converting it to carbon dioxide.
Burning Fossil Fuels Releases Sulfur Dioxide and Oxides of Nitrogen
1) When fossil fuels are burned harmful gases,e.g. sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides 2) The sulfur dioxide (SO₃) comes from sulfur impurities in the fossil fuels. (Sulfur impurities are just unwanted chemicals that contain sulfur.) 3) The nitrogen oxides are made when fuels are burnt in the internal combustion engines.
Sulfur Dioxide and Oxides of Nitrogen Cause Problems
1) When sulfur dioxide or oxides of nitrogen mix with clouds they can cause acid rain. 2) Acid rain kills plants and animals that live in lakes and rivers. 3) Acid rain also kills trees and damages limestone buildings and ruins stone statues. It also causes metals to wear away (corrode). It's shocking . 4) Oxides of nitrogen can also cause a type of air pollution called photochemical smog.
