migration transition
a change in the migration pattern in a society that results from industrialization, population growth, and other social and economic changes that also produces the demographic transition Example- With the migration transition, you will find that the number of migrants and where they are going changes a lot.
push factor
a factor that induces people to move out of their present location Example- The unstable government was a large push factor in emigrants from Greece.
pull factor
a factor that induces people to move to a new location Example- The well paying jobs in America was a large pull factor for migrants.
migration
a form of relocation diffusion that involves a permanent move to a new location Example- Our family migrated to Pawleys Island 3 years ago.
unauthorized immigrant
a person who enters a country without proper documents to do so Example- The unauthorized immigrant from Mexico stayed under the radar from the police.
guest worker
a term once used for worker who migrated to the developed countries of northern and western Europe, usually from southern or eastern Europe from north Africa in search of a higher paying job Example- The guest workers from india worked very hard in the England based company.
mobility
all types of movements between locations Example- The boy showed mobility when he walked to the fridge.
floodplain
an area subject to flooding during a given number of years, according to historical trends Example- It is not a good idea to buy property on a floodplain.
intervening obstacle
an environmental or cultural feature of the landscape that hinders migration Example- The quota was in intervening obstacle on the immigrants to Germany.
desertification
degradation of land, especially in semiarid areas, primarily because of human actions such as excessive crop planting, animal grazing, and tree cutting. Also known as semiarid land degradation Example- the desertification in the valley of California left the area with no trees.
quota
in reference to migration, a law that places a maximum limit on the number of people who can immigrate to a country each year Example- If Germany had a very low quota then migration would be very different then it is now.
brain drain
large scale emigration by talented people Example-There was a brain drain when the successful companies employees moved over seas.
emigration
migration from a location Example- The family emigrated from Syria.
chain migration
migration of people to a specific location because relatives or members of the same nationality previously migrated there Example- The family migrating to new York because there were relatives there is an example of a chain migration.
immagration
migration to a new location Example- The entire town immigrated to northern Italy.
counterurbanization
net migration from urban to rural areas in more developed countries Example- there has been many cases of counterurbanization in Charlotte.
international migration
permanent migration from one country to another Example- The family moving over seas is an example of international migration.
forced migration
permanent movement compelled by cultural or environmental factors Example- The government decision has made many feel like they are becoming forced migrants.
interregional migration
permanent movement from one region to another Example- When our family moved from North Carolina to South Carolina we stayed within the region of the Carolina's and this was an example of interregional migration.
voluntary migration
permanent movement undertaken by choice Example- When the family left their home country for the fun of it, they were voluntary migrants.
internal migration
permanent movement within a particular country Example- Many people I know have migrated internally within the USA.
intraregional migration
permanent movement within one region of a country Example- When the family moved from one side of town to the other, this was an example of intraregional migration.
circulation
short term, repetitive, or cyclical movements that recur on a regular basis Example- Circulation happens when the girl walks to school every day.
internally displaced person
someone who has been forced to migrate for similar political reasons as a refugee but has not migrated across an international border Example- The girl who moved to northern Iraq from the south was an internally displaced person.
asylum seeker
someone who has migrated to another country in the hope of being recognized as a refugee Example- Many Syrian refugees are asylum seekers.
refugee
someone who is forced to migrate from his or her own country and cannot return for fear of persecution because of his or her race, religion, nationality, membership in a social group, or political opinion Example- The refugees from Syria are not sure where they will end up.
net migration
the difference between the level of immigration and the level of emigration Example-The net migration in Syria is very different then in the USA.
circular migration
the temporary movement of a migrant worker between home and host countries to seek employment Example- The man traveling to and from Russia and Italy in search of a job is an example of circular migration.
remittance
transfer of money by workers to people in the country from which they emigrated Example- The remittance from the boy in America to his family in Mexico will hopefully one day allow his family to move to America.
