When remember/retireve a memory..

LTM --> STM

Memory

Persistence of learning overtime via storage and retrieval of info.

Storage

Retention of encoded information over time.

LTM to STM (in Multi-Store Model)

Retrieving

2nd step of Multi-Store Memory

Sensory Input

3rd step of Multi-Store Memory

Sensory Memory

5th step of Multi-Store Memory

Short-term memory

What levels of processing are shallow and which ones are deep?

Structural and Phonemic (shallow) Semantic (deep)

LoP: What are the three levels of processing?

Structural, Phonemic, Semantic

Short Term Memory

activated memory that holds a few items briefly. 5-9 items 30 seconds max

working memory: LTM --> STM liaison.

concerned with immediate perceptual, linguistic, and executive processing.

Levels of Processing Model

depth of process by memory created --> depth of memory

6th step of Multi-Store Memory to LTM

encoding

4th step of Multi-Store Memory

encoding/ attention to important or novel information

Multi-Store model for memory

focuses on structure and organization of memory (sensory, STM, LTM). where memory store, capacity, duration

Two Types of Sensory Memory

iconic (visual) and echoic (auditory)

Sensory Memory: large amts of info, but very temporary

immediate initial recording of sensory memory what we hold onto/pay attention to.

Example of Semantic processing (deep)

processing *meaning* and associating with existing knowledge does the word fit in a sentence? can you create a mental picture?

Example of Structural Processing (shallow..skim)

processing physical qualities/appearance is the word boy made up of three letters? how many letters in sentence?

Example of phonemic processing (shallow..person's voice, how word sounds)

processing the sound/auditory Does the word rhyme with toy? how easy to pronounce?

Long Term Memory

relatively permanent and limitless storehouse of memory (e.g. childhood memories)

deeper processing

stronger memories

Retrieval

the process of getting info out of memory storage

Encoding

the processing of information into memory system so that it can be stored

Shallower processing...

weaker memories

1st step of Multi-Store Memory
