There are 2 types of Glands

1. Exocrine glands; secrete into ducts 2. Endocrine glands; secrete into tissue fluid or blood

Exocrine glands are classified according to the organization of their cells. List the 4 types

Apocrine Glands Description of secretion & example

Cellular product & portions of the free ends of glandular cells pinch off during secretion. They loose small portions of their cell bodies during secretion. E.g. mammary glands, ceruminous glands lining the external ear canal

Holocrine Glands Description of secretion & example

Disintegrated entire cells filled with secretory products. They release entire cells filled with secretory products. E.g. sebaceous glands of the skin

What are simple tubular glands

Straight tubelike gland that opens directly onto surface e.g. intestinal glands of small intestine

Merocine Glands Description of secretion & example

a fluid product released through the cell membrane by exocytosis with a high enzyme content. They release secretion without loosing cytoplasm. Most secretory cells are merocrine. Mucous cells secrete mucous. E.g. salivary glands, pancreatic glands, sweat glands of the skin

what are branched tubular glands

branched, tubelike gland; duct short or absent e.g. gastric glands

what are alveolar glands

consist of saclike dilations connected to the surface by narrowed ducts

what are tubular glands

consist of simple epithelium lined tubes that opens directly onto surface

long, coiled, tubelike gland; long duct e.g. eccrine (sweat) glands of skin

what are branched alveolar glands

secretory portions of gland expand into saclike compartments along duct e.g. sebaceous gland of skin
