Deaf culture is learned behaviors/perceptions used as guidelines to determine the norms of Deaf people curated on Deaf people's similar experiences. Two examples that make a Deaf culture is the use of ASL as the primary language and a visually-based culture of Deaf people. A Deaf community is larger than a Deaf culture and contains more people such as D/deaf people, hearing friends, institutions or people that support Deaf/hard-of-hearing people. The center of a Deaf community is Deaf culture. Two examples that make a Deaf community is the inclusion of hearing friends and the inclusion of the businesses or institutions that support it. I would say in some aspects this is similar to my community. My community includes the businesses that support it, such as ones that support the sports teams or school in my area. It also includes the friends of the community that try to better it in some way or just support it as a whole. However, I do not think my community has a culture at the center of it. I do not think I belong to a close-knit enough community to all share one culture, rather there are many different cultures that make up my community.

Deaf culture is the learned behaviors that form the guidelines to determine the norms of Deaf people curated on Deaf people's similar experiences. A Deaf community is different from this. The center of Deaf community is Deaf culture but it also includes all of the potential outside players. Such as, D/deaf people, hearing friends, and institutions/people that support Deaf. I as a student am not yet apart of the Deaf community, if I continue to learn ASL and start to interact more with the Deaf community, maybe by befriending a Deaf person or going to Deaf events, then I could be considered apart of the community. Since I am not Deaf I will never be apart of Deaf culture.

I learned that Martha's vineyard was a large bilingual community with spoken and signed language. Most individuals grew up using both since 1 in every 25 people were born deaf. It is considered the first time in history that Deaf people were equal in a society, they were involved in church, town meetings, and many other things. Another thing I learned was about the World Conference on the Education of the Deaf. This conference was held to determine the best way to educate Deaf children. However, no Deaf educators were allowed to attend. In the United States, a ban of the use of sign language was put into practice and Deaf people were removed from their jobs as teachers. This time in the United States is known as the Dark Ages of ASL and Deaf Culture. To this day, this still has an impact as only 7% of teachers of the Deaf are Deaf. Alexander Graham Bell had such a strong negative presence in the deaf community. He helped the Oralist movement, which promoted lipreading and speech and banned the use of sign language. He used his power and prestige to prevent the teaching of sign language in school. This caused Oralism to become the main method of instruction in Deaf schools. Bell also was very against the intermarriage of Deaf people. He believed that Deaf people should be wiped out since "they are a defective race". This is an example of discrimination and oppression of the Deaf community.

It is important to ask personal questions and share personal information in the Deaf culture and community because forming personal connections and long-term relationships is highly valued in the Deaf community. This is because Deaf culture is small, causing to Deaf people to depend on each for support. Deaf culture is also considered a collectivist culture, meaning the groups welfare will come before the individual. When interrupting a conversation it is important to use the sign "hold on a minute" if you are breaking eye contact. This shows you are still engaged and paying attention to the conversation as you divert your attention for a second. It is also important to share personal information when meeting a Deaf person for the first time so they can figure out your connection to the community. If you are running late or leaving early it is also important to share why as sharing information is important and considered polite. This is different then my culture, as often when meeting people it would be considered rude to ask personal questions about them. Typically people would view it as intrusive or that I am being nosey. However, with people I am close with it is common for me to share personal information about myself or perhaps where I leaving early to.

One factor that may influence how a sign is produced is the age of Deaf person. If a Deaf person is older, they may have been taught a different sign when they were learning ASL. However, as the times change some signs change as well. Therefore, a younger Deaf person may learn an updated version of the same sign. A few examples of this is telephone and hospital. Another factor that could influence how a Deaf person may sign is where they are from. If someone is from a different state or a different region of even the same state, the sign could differ. An example of this is birthday or Halloween. An example of this is in my own language is the difference in how my roommate and I say it is cold outside. Since she is from NYC she often says it is "brick", while I will just say it is cold. Another example of language variation is when I use terms that my parents are unfamiliar with because of the age gape. Often when I agree with something I will just respond with "facts", while my parents would just state their agreement.

What are the social behavior rules in the Deaf community? (10 pts) How do these rules compares with the hearing community? (read culture Topic #2 on page 51-52) (10 pts.)

One social rule in the Deaf community is the different ways to get a Deaf's person attention. These can include, lightly touching their arm (shake firmly if an emergency), waving in peripheral vision (not in face), stomping on the floor, turning the lights on and off, or asking for a third person to get their attention. Another social rule is to walk through a Deaf conversation. If you stop and wait, it indicates that you are trying to join the conversation. By walking through, you are indicating that you are just trying to get past. Some Deaf will sign "excuse me" as they move past. The the third social rule is to sign rather than speak in the presence of a Deaf person. It is also important to stick to one language, try not to sign and speak at the same time as it can make it more confusing. I would say these rules are different than the hearing community. Motions such as waving in someones peripheral vision or turning the lights on and off to get their attention would be considered rude. Walking through someone's conversation would also be considered rude.
