Astronomy exam 2
What classifies a Dwarf planet?
An astronomical objects more than the eight planets
Describe Europa
An ocean covered by ice
How do I know that the moon was once Molten?
As the moon cool and contracted it from the line cliffs called scarps indicating where the surface shrink unevenly.
How was the sun formed?
At the center of the solar nebula. after about 100 million years the temperature at the proto-sun center was high enough to ignite thermonuclear fusion reactions
Describe Saturn's moon Titan
Atmosphere is bigger than births rains natural gas and snows
Why are there no Mare on the far side of the moon?
Because the crust is thicker on the far side
What is the density of rock?
3000
What is earths atmosphere made up of?
4/5 nitrogen and 1/5 oxygen
How many exoplanets have been discovered orbiting other stars?
506
How many moons does Jupiter have?
65
How many moons does Saturn have
65
What is the density of iron?
8000
What is our solar system made up of?
98% hydrogen and helium, 2% other
What is Jupiter's Great Red Spot?
A long lived oval cloud circulation similar to a hurricane
Describe Venus's atmosphere
Mostly carbon dioxide but contains dense cloud with droplets of concentrated sulfuric acid mixed with yellow sulfur dust
Describe earths core
A smaller solid inner core surrounded by a liquid outer core. The outer core is surrounded by the dense mantle which in turn is surrounded by the thin low density crust on which we live. Inner and outer cores are composed of primarily iron. The mantle is composed of iron rich minerals.
Is Jupiter a failed star?
No Jupiter has 75 times too little little mass to shine as a star
Does Jupiter have continents and oceans?
No Jupiter is surrounded by thick atmosphere primarily composed of hydrogen and helium that gradually becomes liquid as you move inward. Only solid matter in Jupiter is its core.
Is Saturn the only planet with rings?
No all four giant planets have rings
Do we see every part of the moon surface at some time during the lunar cycle?
No because the men's rotation around or is it synchronous we always see the same side of the force of them it is only been seen from a spacecraft that pass or orbits it
Described Io
No craters, more volume than Venus
Are the rings of Saturn solid ribbons?
No saturns rings are all composed of thin closely spaced ringlets consisting of particles of ice and ice coated rocks. If they were solid ribbons Saturns gravitational tidal force would tear them apart
What are Mare?
Dark spots on the moon
What is the formula for density?
Density= mass/ volume (d=m/v)
How long has earth existed and how do we know this?
Earth formed along with the rest of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago. The age is determined from the amount of radioactive decay that has occurred on earth.
What are the moons Highlands?
Light or whiter parts on the moon
What is solar wind?
Stream of charged particle
Does the moon rotate and if so how fast?
The moon rotates at the same rate that it revolves around the earth once every 27.3 earth days. if the moon did not rotate then as it revolves we would see the entire service from earth which we do not
Which restroom planet has the coolest surface temperature?
The nighttime side of mercury
Describe Mercurys atmosphere
The thinnest atmosphere of all terrestrial planets because it's gravity is too weak to hold a permanent atmosphere
Can earths ozone layer which is been partially completed the naturally replenished?
Yes that is created continuously from normal oxygen molecules by their interaction with the suns ultraviolet radiation
Were the sun and planets among the first generation of objects created in the universe?
No, all matter and energy were created by the big bang. however, much of the material that exists in our solar system was processed inside stars that evolved before the solar system existed. the solar system formed billions of years after the Big Bang occurred.
Describe the moons atmosphere
Nonexistent
Have any earthlike planets been discovered orbiting sun like stars?
Not really, most exoplanets are Jupiter-likegas giants. The planets similar in mass and size to earth are orbiting remnants of stars that already exploded.
What is between the galaxy's
Nothing
What is an exoplanet?
Planet that orbits a star outside the solar system. Most exoplanets have a mass roughly equal to the size of Jupiter
What is the most massive planet in the solar system?
Jupiter
When was the Big Bang?
13.75 billion years ago
How big is Jupiters great red Spot
2 Earth's could fit inside of it
What are Jovian planets?
Gaseous planets. I'll have lots of moons dynamic atmospheres and magnetic fields. Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune
What causes the ocean tides?
Gravitational forces from the moon and sun combined with earths motion
What is accretion?
Gravitational gathering of material
How many galaxies exist?
1 trillion
How many stars are there in the solar system?
1, the sun
Describe the size and mass of the moon?
1/4th the size of earth and 1/100 the mass of earth
What is the density of water?
1000
How were the planets formed?
From gas ice and dust in the solar nebula orbiting the Protosun
Which planet is most similar in size to earth?
Venus
Which terrestrial planet has the hottest surface temperature?
Venus
