The two main types are open-angle and angle-closure. These are marked by an increase of intraocular pressure (IOP), or pressure inside the eye.

10 to 21mm/hg

Is caused by blocked drainage canals, resulting in a sudden rise in intraocular pressure Has a closed or narrow angle between the iris and cornea Develops very quickly Has symptoms and damage that are usually very noticeable Demands immediate medical attention. It is also called acute glaucoma or narrow-angle glaucoma. Unlike open-angle glaucoma, angle-closure glaucoma is a result of the angle between the iris and cornea closing.

Angle-closure glaucoma, a less common form of glaucoma:

No medical or surgical treatment is available for this condition.

Can glaucoma be cured

No. There is no cure for glaucoma. Vision lost from the disease cannot be restored.

How is glaucoma detected

Visual acuity test. This eye chart test measures how well you see at various distances. Visual field test. This test measures your peripheral (side vision). It helps your eye care professional tell if you have lost peripheral vision, a sign of glaucoma. Dilated eye exam. In this exam, drops are placed in your eyes to widen, or dilate, the pupils. Your eye care professional uses a special magnifying lens to examine your retina and optic nerve for signs of damage and other eye problems. After the exam, your close-up vision may remain blurred for several hours. Tonometry is the measurement of pressure inside the eye by using an instrument called a tonometer. Numbing drops may be applied to your eye for this test. A tonometer measures pressure inside the eye to detect glaucoma. Pachymetry is the measurement of the thickness of your cornea. Your eye care professional applies a numbing drop to your eye and uses an ultrasonic wave instrument to measure the thickness of your cornea.

The dry form is more common than the wet form, with about 85 to 90 percent of AMD patients diagnosed with dry AMD. The wet form of the disease usually leads to more serious vision loss.

Wet And Dry Forms Of Macular Degeneration

Open-Angle Glaucoma

glaucoma, the most common form of glaucoma, accounting for at least 90% of all glaucoma cases: Is caused by the slow clogging of the drainage canals, resulting in increased eye pressure Has a wide and open angle between the iris and cornea Develops slowly and is a lifelong condition Has symptoms and damage that are not noticed.

Age-related macular degeneration — also called macular degeneration, AMD

is deterioration of the macula, which is the small central area of the retina of the eye that controls visual acuity.

"Open-angle"

means that the angle where the iris meets the cornea is as wide and open as it should be. Open-angle glaucoma is also called primary or chronic glaucoma. It is the most common type of glaucoma, affecting about three million Americans.
