MOVE2BU

Move-In Day is a way to make the transition to college life a little easier for incoming students. Upper division students, faculty, and staff all volunteer their time to help first-year students unload their cars and move their belongings into their new rooms.

Our campus includes a section of the Brazos River. Lake Waco is about 10 minutes away. The over 400 acre Cameron Park is literally minutes from campus, complete with several mountain biking and hiking trails—second largest trail system for a city park in the United States

BSB facts

The $103 million - 508,000 square foot Baylor Sciences Building was designed to foster diversity in teaching and learning styles through small and large classrooms and laboratories and to encourage learning communities outside the classroom in comfortable study spaces and group work areas. It was opened in 2004, making it the largest academic building on campus.

The Campus Preparedness Plan is a notification system that can call, text, or email the entire campus immediately.

Farmers Market

The Farmer's Market on Saturdays attracts vendors from all over Texas and is a popular spot for Baylor students

Common Grounds is a coffee shop right on campus that doubles as a live music venue. It features an open-mic night every Wednesday, as well as weekly performances by bands like Ben Rector and Switchfoot. Heritage Creamery is a new ice cream shop next door.

Safety

- Baylor is as safe as any other university - Baylor has a lot of resources devoted to keeping students safe and making sure transportation is convenient - Baylor has made mistakes in the past, but has taken great measures to make sure they aren't repeated and become a best-practices university with regards to Title IX

Thanksgiving

- Baylor students, faculty and staff comes out to Fountain Mall to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner which includes turkey, ham, mash potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie - Last year's dinner included a hot chocolate bar, live music and a special performance from Baylor's Guerilla Troupe.

BU Traditions

- Baylor was founded in 1845, making it the oldest continually-operating university in the state of Texas, and older than the state of Texas itself! Because we've been around for so long, we have a rich history of traditions on campus. Baylor feels like a family because we have so many events where students, staff, and faculty can interact and have fun. - There's almost always some kind of event taking place on campus. - Freshmen have an especially active role in Baylor traditions.

- Brooks, Honors, and Teal - Require a 2-year living commitment - Offer a special sense of community through morning/evening prayers, community dinners, and Master's Teas

first year communities

- Collins, Kokernot, Martin, Penland, Texana, and University House - These communities are open to first-year students of all majors and backgrounds, which makes them a great option for branching out and meeting people you wouldn't otherwise meet in class.

SRAT FRAT

- Each fraternity and sorority hosts an "All-University" event in the fall which is open to all Baylor students. Examples include ATO bed races, XO chili cook-off, Kappa Karnival, Fiji Haunted House, and Pi Phi's "Howdy"

Christmas on 5th

- Features a Christmas Tree Farm, Christmas Marketplace, Carriage Rides, a Petting Zoo, Live Nativity scene, Pictures with Santa, a Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, and concert - This celebration is geared toward families, so many Baylor professors and Wacoans bring their children.

Tidwell

- Houses the Religion and History departments - Two Religion classes are required: The Christian Scriptures and The Christian Heritage. Both are an academic and historical look at the Bible and how Christianity has developed

BOBO

- Houses the offices for our chapel staff and university chaplain Burt Burleson - Offers a sort of matching service for students to find a church in Waco Great study space and usually has free coffee - Has service opportunities in Waco through Urban Missions as well as global mission trips. Mission trips are often organized around different departments and majors so that you can put to use your classroom knowledge to serve others.

Waco Hall

- Main event held here is Chapel. All undergraduates are required to take 2 semesters of chapel during their time at Baylor. Monday services have a speaker, Wednesday services are more like a worship service. - Speakers have included: S. Truett Cathy (CEO of Chick-fil-a), Max Lucado, and the creator of Veggie tales - The auditorium has 2200 seats - Other special events at Waco Hall: After Dark, All University Sing, GospelFest, StompFest, Gateway to India etc. Sing is one of the largest off-Broadway musical revue style shows; over 1600 students participated as performers, crew, and production staff

DIA

- Means "Day of the Bear" in Spanish Always takes place in April on a Tuesday, to give students a much-needed break before finals begin - The Baylor Chamber of Commerce organizes events throughout the day. Last year included

HOCO

- The Smithsonian institute confirmed that Baylor's original homecoming event in 1909 was likely the first of its kind in the nation. We also boast the nation's longest homecoming parade, which begins downtown and ends on 5th street. - Freshman Mass Meeting honors 10 students who died in a bus-train accident in 1927. These students symbolize the "Baylor Spirit." Immediately following this memorial service, the freshman work together to build the "Eternal Flame" bonfire in the middle of Fountain Mall that will be lit during the pep rally. - Pigskin Revue is an annual Homecoming tradition showcasing the winning acts from the previous spring's All University Sing competition. The performances are musical, Broadway-style acts prepared and performed by campus organizations, complete with costumes, elaborate backdrops and props, and complex choreography.

WACO

- Waco is a safe, fun place to live with plenty of things to do! - Students are involved on campus and in the community - Waco is a medium-sized town that has all the big city advantages with the small town friendliness. - Many students choose to stay on campus or in Waco on the weekends

Living

- We never use the word "dorms;" we have residence halls that help foster relationships with other students and faculty members and are a resource for academic, spiritual, and emotional support - Living on campus your first year is a great experience that makes it easy to make friends and get involved right from the start. - Baylor features lots of options for living on campus. Some choose to live with other students who have a similar interest (either academic or non-academic) but some choose to live in a more traditional setting to branch out

Baylor does not have ANY co-ed residence halls. Some buildings house both men and women, but you will only be able to access the side you live on.

CLS

Baylor has Community Leaders (CLs) instead of RAs. These older students live with and mentor 30-60 residents.

Average class size is 26. The student to faculty ratio is 15:1.

BUS

BUS (Baylor University Shuttle) is free and runs 5 campus area routes on school days to pick students up who live in off campus apartments

Upper On Campus Housing

Baylor also offers Upper-division communities for transfer students and upperclassmen that offer the amenities of an apartment but the resources of on-campus housing. These include Arbors, Brooks Flats, Fairmont, Gables, and University Parks.

Chip and Jo

Baylor alumni couple Chip and Joanna Gaines of HGTV's Fixer Upper live here and have the Magnolia Market which features food trucks, a bakery, and a home goods store (brings in over 40,000 visitors per week)

Baylor and Beyond, Education, Entrepreneurship, Fine Arts, Leadership, Outdoor Adventure, and Science/Health Bring students of all majors and classifications together

DR PEPPER

Dr. Pepper was also concocted here at a corner drug store in 1885. It is America's oldest major soft drink company. We have a Dr. Pepper museum downtown.

Pepper Hamilton

Since the completion of the Pepper Hamilton report last year, Baylor has already implemented 80 out of 105 proposed recommendations to improve campus safety including expanding the counseling center staff and Title IX office, requiring Title IX training for all students, and creating an anonymous reporting online portal

Spice

Spice Village is a collection of shops in the warehouse district of Waco. It features over 90 vendors that sell everything from trendy clothing to home decorations and is perfect for Christmas shopping and stocking up on Baylor gear.

Cars

Students are welcome to bring cars to campus, and can buy a parking permit. These last from August to August and cost up to $350.

SI

Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions are optional, bi-weekly review sessions taught by undergrads or grads to help students succeed in the classroom

Time

There are 15 minutes between classes, which is how long it takes to get from one end of campus to the other. Our campus is very walkable.

Types of communities

There are three different styles of residence halls at Baylor: Living-Learning Communities (LLCs), Residential Colleges, and First-Year Communities.
