Describe the importance of the inner membranes separating different regions of the mitochondrion and the chloroplast.

The separation of the inner membrane is important because it allows for various reactions to occur in the different regions of the mitochondria and chloroplast, so it also allows these organelles to maintain different concentrations of ions/molecules on each side of the membrane.

Based on the diagram, describe how the structure of these organelles controls movement across the membranes.

The structure of the organelles control movement across the membrane with their inner membranes through active transport, which is the movement of substances (proteins) across a cell membrane against a concentration gradient requiring an input of energy.

Explain how the folding of the mitochondrial inner membrane and the many individual chloroplast thylakoids are beneficial to a cell that is carrying out chemical reactions.

This is beneficial because the folding will increase the surface area of the membrane, which will allow for more enzymes to pack into the smaller space and will allow for more reactions to take place such as ATP production.
