mandible

a horizontal, horseshoe-shaped body with a flat portion projecting upward at each end. This projection is divided into two processes - a posterior mandibular condyle and an anterior coronoid process.

lacrimal bones

a thin, scalelike structure located in the medial wall of each orbit between the ethmoid bone and the maxilla.

zygomatic bones

bones form the prominences of the cheeks below and to the sides of the eyes. These bones also help form the lateral walls and the floors of the orbits. Each bone has a temporal process, which extends posteriorly to join the process of a temporal bone.

sphenoid bone

butterfly-shaped bone; houses the pituitary gland; base of the skull; in front of temporal bone

maxillae

form the upper jaw; portions of these bones comprise the anterior roof of the mouth, the floor of the orbits, and the sides and floor of the nasal cavity. They also contain the sockets of the upper teeth.

frontal bone

forms the anterior portion of the skull above the eyes; marked by a supraorbital foramen; blood vessels and nerves pass to the tissues of the forehead. Within this bone are two frontal sinuses, one above each eye near the midline.

occipital bone

joins the parietal bone along the lambdoidal suture. Forms the back of the skull and the base of the cranium.

ethmoid bone

located in front of the sphenoid bone and it consists of two masses, one on each side of the nasal cavity which are joined horizontally by thin cribriform plates. The plates form part of the roof of the nasal cavity. Portions of this bone form sections of the cranial floor, the orbital walls, and the nasal cavity walls.

nasal bones

long, thin, and nearly rectangular. They lie side by side and are fused at the midline, where they form the bridge of the nose.

temporal bone

on each side of the skull joins the parietal bone along a squamosal suture. They form parts of of the sides and the base of the cranium; located near the ear.

parietal bone

one bone is located on each side of the skull just beside the frontal bone; these bones form the bulging sides and roof of the cranium. They are fused at the midline along the sagittal suture, and they meet the frontal bone along the coronal suture.

inferior nasal conchae

scroll-shaped thin bones making up lateral part of nasal cavity; the membranes lining them help to filter and warm air

palatine bones

these L-shaped bones are located behind the maxillae. The horizontal portions form the posterior section of the hard palate and the floor of the nasal cavity. The perpendicular portions help form the lateral walls of the nasal cavity.

vomer bone

this thin, flat bone is located along the midline within the nasal cavity. It joins the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, and together they form the nasal septum.
