Bulk Forming Laxatives
Psyllium mucilloid: action
added bulk or enlarged fecal mass. Stimulates peristalsis and defecation. May also pull water into intestinal lumen. Effects similar to that of increased fiber. May take 2 to three days to work (not effective in acute constipation)

Psyllium mucilloid: Nursing Implications
Mix in 8ox of fluid immediately before taking. Follow with additional fluid if able. Never administer the drug dry. Do not chew granules.
Psyllium mucilloid: Contraindications
Patient's who can't or unwilling to drink adequate fluid; patient's with swallowing difficulty; and patients with adhesions or strictures in the GI tract.
