C172 Chapter 7
What are the two approaches for assigning VLAN membership? Explain the function of each.
A static VLAN is basically a port-based VLAN 2. With a dynamic VLAN, ports are assigned based on either the computer's MAC address or the username of the client logged on to the computer.
What is the purpose of the MIB?
It is a collection of standard objects that are used to obtain configuration parameters and performance data on a networking device.
Which port number does SNMP use, and which transport protocol does it use?
Port 161 and UDP
List the three types of VLANs.
Port-based, tag-based, protocol-based
The SNMP MIB gets request ifDescr returns what information from a router?
The description of the router's interfaces.
What is an advantage of using VLANs?
The network administrator can group computers and servers in the same VLAN based on the organizational group even if they are not on the same physical segment or even in the same building.
When the command show run is entered on a Cisco router what does the output "SNMP-server test RO" mean?
This text indicates that the SNMP services have been configured on the router, the community string is test, and access is limited to read-only.
Use Figure 7-8 to answer the following questions.
Which MIB is issued? Hide AnsweriPhysAddress What information is returned? The physical (MAC) address of the networking device. Which port number is used? Port 161 Which protocol is being used? How do you know? SNMP, because the connection is to port 161 (a well-known port number). Who is the manufacturer of this networking device? Hide AnswerThe OUI 00-10-7b indicates that this is a Cisco router.
When a port is not assigned to any VLAN, is it still a member of a VLAN?
Yes. It becomes a member of a default VLAN, which is VLAN 1.
Provide examples of three MIBs to collect data traffic from the router as discussed in section 7-5.

Write the Cisco router command for configuring SNMP on a Cisco router. Assume a community string of networking and set the permissions to read-only. Be sure to show the router prompt.
router(config)# snmp community networking ro
