Chapter 10 Energy Studyguide
Daily Electricity
80% of US American use and consumes fossils daily for electricity or household use.
Products made from crude oil
After crude oil is removed from the ground, it is sent to a refinery where different parts of the crude oil are separated into useable petroleum products. These products include gasoline, diesel fuel and hating oil, jet fuel, petrochemical feedstocks, waxes, lubricating oils, and asphalt.
Crude Oil and Petroleum Products
Crude oil is a mixture of hyrdocarbons that formed from plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. It is a fossil fuel, and it exists in liquid form in underground pools or reservoirs, in tiny spaces with sedimentary rocks, and near the surface in tar (oil sands.) Pettoleum products can be made from coal, natural gas, and biomass.
Fossil Fuels
Formed naturally from decayed plants and animals in the Earth over hundreds of years. For example: Petroleum (Oil), Natural Gas, and Coal
Petroleum's past names
Petroleum (oil) was called crude oil and liquid gold in the past.
The 3 R's to help conserve our non-renewable resources
The 3 R's are Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Things that can be recycled include: Aluminum cans, plastic, cardboard, glass, and paper.
Suggested ways to conserve energy
Use energy efficient light bulbs, turn down your thermostat, Airdry your dishes, Carpool, and shut off your lights when you leave the room.
