24 hours

how long does it take for the stomach to empty into the small intestine?

4-6 hours

if the stomach is empty but food is found in the small intestine then how long has the body been dead?

4-6 hours

when does the discoloration become permanent?

after 8 hours

name factors that affect rigor mortis and how long it sets in.

ambient temperature, weight of the body, the body's clothing or lack of it, any illness the person had at time of death, the level of physical activity at the time of death, and sun exposure.

larva

immature form of an animal that undergoes metamorphosis (for example, a maggot)

how can lividity help crime investigators?

it can determine the original position of the boy and if it has been moved.

what are you accessory organs?

liver, gall bladder and pancreas

what is the job of the liver?

make bile

manner of death

one of four means by which someone dies (i.e., natural, accidental, suicidal, or homicidal)

instar

one of the three larval stages of insect development

Explain what happens to the body when it experiences livor mortis.

red blood cells break down and turn a bluish-purple color. with decomposition blood pools in the lower parts of the body.

pancreas

releases insulin which regulates glucose in the blood

job of gall bladder

stores bile

death

the cessation, or end, of life

algor mortis

the cooling of the body after death

cause of death

the immediate reason for a person's death (such as heart attack, kidney failure)

livor mortis

the pooling of the blood in tissues after death resulting in a reddish color to the skin

decomposition

the process of rotting and breaking down

mechanism of death

the specific body failure that leads to death

autolysis

the spontaneous breakdown of cells as they self-digest

pupa

the stage in the insect's life cycle when the larva forms a capsule around itself and changes into its adult form

rigor mortis

the stiffening of the skeletal muscles after death

forensic entomology

the study of insects as they pertain to legal issues

how do you find the temperature of the corpse?

you stick a thermometer into the liver

If undigested food is present in the stomach at the time of death how long has the body been dead?

0-2 hours

how much body heat is lost after every hour after death?

1-1.5

describe the digestive system.

Food is broken down in the mouth by the salivary glands that release amylase which breaks down carbohydrates. then the food is brought to the esophagus where it then goes to the stomach. In the stomach pepsin breaks down protein and then the food goes to the small intestine where it then travels to the large intestine where water is absorbed. The food is then traveled to the rectum and released through the anus.

describe the cycle of rigor mortis.

Rigor begins 2-6 hours after death starting with the head and works its way down. at 12 hours rigor reaches its peak and the entire body is rigid. from 15- 36 hours the body slowly loses rigor starting its way from the head down to the bigger leg muscles. and by 36 hours the body's stiffness will have mostly disappeared.
