Chapter 12 Questions
Identify and describe the four major parts of the adult brain.
Cerebral hemispheres, diencephalon, brain stem, cerebellum
Differentiate between the three white matter tracts - commissures, association, and projection.
Commissures: connect corresponding gray areas of the two hemispheres Association: connect different parts of the same hemisphere Projection: run vertically and tie the cortex to the rest of the nervous system
Explain lateralization of cortical function.
Lateralization of cortical functioning refers to the division of labor between both cerebral hemispheres for almost all brain activity. Each hemisphere has abilities not completely shared by its partner.
Name and locate the ventricles of the brain
The brain contains four ventricles filled with cerebrospinal fluid. The lateral ventricles are in the cerebral hemispheres; the third ventricle is in the diencephalon; the fouth ventricle is between the brain stem and the cerebellum and connects with the central canal of the spinal cord.
Name the functions of the cerebral motor
controls voluntary movement
Name the function of the sensory and association areas
integrates information from different receptors or sensory areas
Identify and describe the major lobes, fissures, and functional areas of the cerebral cortex
occipital, temporal, parietal, frontal, insula
List the functions of the CSF
protection, weight balance of the brain, nourishes the brain
