Osmotic Pressure Occurs

- At equilibrium due to the different heights of liquid on either side of teh membrane and is equivalent to the pressure needed to equalize teh fluid levels across the membrane

Tonicity

- Is the relative concentration of solutions that determine the direction and extent of diffusion

Hypotonic

- One solution is of lower osmotic pressure, it is this with respect to the more concentrated one - More solvent in respect to solute

Osmotic Pressure

- Pressure which stops osmosis of the solution

Hypertonic

- The more concentrated solution, is this with respect to the more dilute solution - More solute in respect to solvent

Osmosis

- The process of a solvent moving from one compartment to another, accross a semipermeable membrane, toward a higher solute concentration

Isotonic

- Two solutions with identical osmotic pressure, separated by a semipermeable membrane, no osmosis will occur

Semipermeable

- When in contact with a solution, these materials only allow ions or small molecules - water molecules - to pass through their network of tiny pores

If and external pressure _______ to the osmotic pressure is applied to the solution, the liquid levels in the two arms can be ______________

1) Equal 2) Equalized

At _______ the pressure difference resulting from the _________ liquid heights becomes so _________ that the net flow of water ceases.

1) Equilibrium 2) Unequal 3) Large
