Which of the following correctly describes a metagenomic approach in the clinic? A biopsy of an unusual mole suspected to be a skin cancer tumor A blood test to detect the presence of HIV The sampling of amniotic fluid during a pregnancy to determine the presence of genetic diseases A cheek swab by a dentist to determine the types and distribution of oral bacteria in a patient

A cheek swab by a dentist to determine the types and distribution of oral bacteria in a patient

Which of the following was not a goal for the human genome project? To obtain a genetic linkage map of the human genome To obtain the DNA sequence of the human genome To analyze the genomes of other model organisms To develop technology to manage large amounts of data All were goals of the human genome project

All were goals of the human genome project

Which of the following statements regarding the genomes of different organisms is true? An organism's genome size does not always correlate with the number of genes it possesses. No archaean genomes have yet been sequenced. Because of their differences in size and number of genes, the genomes of different organisms cannot be compared in any meaningful way. In general, prokaryotic organisms have larger genomes than eukaryotic organisms.

An organism's genome size does not always correlate with the number of genes it possesses.

FISH probes are fluorescently-labeled and designed to bind only to non-complementary DNA. True or False

False

Map units are the units of distance used in physical mapping. True or False

False

Select the correct definition of genetic mapping. -The experimental process of determining the relative locations of genes or other segments of DNA along individual chromosomes -The experimental process of determining the precise physical location of genes or other segments of DNA along individual chromosomes -The experimental process of determining the relative locations of only genes along individual chromosomes -The process of comparing the locations of genes between organisms

The experimental process of determining the relative locations of genes or other segments of DNA along individual chromosomes

In situ hybridization experiments include all of the following components except a single-stranded DNA probe. interphase cells. a DNA stain like DAPI. a fluorescent label on the probe.

interphase cells

What is the purpose of the FISH technique? FISH is a technique for mapping the location of genes onto chromosomes. The FISH map is a physical map, it shows the physical location of a gene on a chromosome. Genes can also be mapped using the frequency of recombination during meiosis. A recombination map calculates map distances between pairs of genes. Gene sequencing can also produce maps of genes that show not only their location but also the structure of the genes themselves. An advantage of the FISH technique is that it does not require information about other genes to map a single gene. All that is needed is a labeled probe that will bind to the gene.View the animation below, then complete the quiz to test your knowledge of the concept. The term in situ is ________ for ________ . Greek; in cell Greek; in place Greek; in lab Latin; in cell Latin; in place

latin, in place
