Chapter 7 Science Questions
what is the chemical equation of photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O ------> C6H12O6 + 6O2 carbon +water------> glucose +oxygen
what type of coal has the highest heat content?
Anthracite
what type of coal has the lowest heat content?
Bituminous
why is coal referred to as stored solar energy
Coal contains energy from sunlight that the plants captured and store aka photosynthesis.
What is the most popular electricity generation used by the United States?
Fossil fuels
what type of rock is coal
Sedimentary rock
Name the top three countries that generate the most electricity.
United States, China, and Japan
main sources of fuel before petroleum
Wood and coal
How does petroleum form?
a fossil fuel that was formed from the remains of ancient marine organisms. millions of years ago, algae and plants lived in shallow seas. after dying and sinking to the seafloor, the organic material mixed with other sediments and was buried.
Why is petroleum considered a nonrenewable resource?
b/c petroleum takes millions of years to create and once all used, no way to restore them.
how does the burning of fossil fuels affect the environment
climate change, air pollution, oil spills, acid rain, and maybe global warming
How does coal form?
comes from energy that was stored in plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago underwater. When the plants died, they formed layers at the bottom of the waters. Water and dirt began to pile up on top of the dead plant remains and compacted and hardened to make coal.
Name three types of nonrenewable energy
fossil fuels: coal, petroleum, and natural gas
where did the largest oil spill in the world occur?
persian gulf in 1991, in kuwait
Name three types of renewable energy
sunlight, wind, rain, tides, water, and geothermal heat.
What determines the quality of a coal deposit?
the amount of carbon
relationship between the carbon content of coal and the heat content of coal
the lower carbon content means the lower heat content of coal.
Why is coal a nonrenewable resource?
was formed from the buried remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago.
