Proportion

A design principle reflecting the size relationship of parts to one another and to the whole.

Asymmetrical

A feeling of balance attainted when the visual unite on either side of a vertical axis are actually different but placed in the composition to create a "felt" balance of the total artwork.

Movement

A principle of design associated with rhythm, referring to the arrangement of parts in an artwork to create sense of motion to the viewer's eye thought the work.

Variety

A principle of design concerned with the inclusion of differences e elements of a composition to offset and add interest to an artwork.

Emphasis

A principle of design in which one element, or combination of elements create more attention than anything else in a composition.

Unity

A principle of design related to the sense of wholeness that results from the successful combination of the component elements in an artwork.

Kinetic Art

Any art construction that contains moving elements that can be set in motion by action of gravity, air currents, motors, springs or magnets.

Composition

The act of organizing the elements of an artwork into a harmoniously unified whole.

Implied Movement

The appearance of movement in a static of artwork resulting from the artist's use of elements such as : subject matte, line, shape, progression, repetition, and alternation, running or pointing fingers.

Dominant

The most prominent and important form in an artwork.

Pattern

The repetition of elements or combination of elements in a recognizable organization.

Approximate Symmetry

The use of forms that are similar yet different an either side of a vertical axis.

Optical Movement

An illusion of movement, or implied movement, caused by the response of the eye to lines, shapes, and colors arranged in artworks.

Motif

Repeated element or combination of elements that repeat in a pattern.

Rhythm

A principle of design that refers to the ways of combining elements to produce the appearance of movement in an artwork, it may be achieved through alternation, repetition, or progression of an element.

Balance

A priniciple of design referring to the arrangement of visual elements to creat stabilitiy in an artwork there are four balance arrangements in art : symmetrical and radial.

Continuation

A strategy for achieving unity in an artwork in which an element or series of elements that occur through a composition may direct the viewers attention from one place to another.
