Chapter 8 The Health Care Team
Primary Nursing
professional nurse has total responsibility for a particular patient or group of patient 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For the entire time the patient is in the hospital through discharge.
Define the term health care team.
refers to all the personnel in all of the departments of any type of health care facility.
clinical Nurse Specialist
specially trained and certified RNs, work with nurse managers to plan care and solve clinical problems related to their patients
unlicensed Assistive Personnel
taught to perform specific task associated with patient care. *making beds, taking vital signs, feeding patients
Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse
under the supervision of other licensed personnel provide nursing services for which they are licensed and qualified.
Health Unit Coordinators
unit secretaries, provide services for a particular nursing unit. answer the phone, preparing patient charts, accessing information through the computer network
Team Leaders
usually RNs or LP/VN long term facilities *being responsible for being certain that appropriate care is provided for the patients on his or her team.
Administrator
*a physician or a college graduate with a degree in business or hospital administration. *This person is often the manager, or director of one of the several departments in a healthcare facility

case manager
4 years. a patients health care in an effort to provide safe and effective care and at the same time contain cost.
Dietitian
a 4 year college. specializes in dietetics. involves foot, nutrition, and diet planning.
Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
a graduate of a 2 or 3 year approved program that provides training in the use of gases, drugs, and equipment under medical supervision to restore normal pulmonary function in patients recovering from illness or injury.
Total Patient Care
assigned to provide all of the care for a specific number of patients.
Nurses Aids
complete a training program and pass a state test. assist the nursing team with patient care
Functional Nursing
each nursing team member is assigned a specific function or task. EX: one team member takes the vital signs of all the patients on the unit, other team members makes all the beds.
Nurse Managers
head nurses or charge nurses are RNs who are appointed to their job by the director of nursing. *planning, supervising, and evaluating nursing care in a single patient care unit, such as the emergency department, obstetrics or surgical unit.
Team Nursing
large patient unit is divided into smaller units with team members working together.
Student Nurse
learn clinical skills under the instruction of a clinical instructor.
PT
minimum of 4 years of college. works with patients to regain full physical function through exercise, massage and other techniques.
Social Worker
minimum of 6 years of college. helps patients and their families adjust to personal problems.
case method
oldest approach to nursing care delivery. The nurse is responsible for the entire care of one or more patients for one shift in a 24 hour period.
