Ciliary Body
Radial bundle of ciliary muscle
Beneath the longitudinal bundle, begins antero-posterior and then branches to run at oblique angles.
Where does the Ciliary body exist?
Between the root of the iris and the ora seratta.
Pars plicata
Consists of folds or plications. This part is closest to the iris and immediately surrounds the lens. It exhibits about 75 radially oriented, fin-like ridges called ciliary processes.
Non-pigmented ciliary epithelium
Derived from the inner layer of the optic cup. It is continuous with the posterior pigmented epithelium of the iris anteriorly and expands to become layers of the sensory retina portion to the ora.
Pigmented ciliary epithelium
Derived from the outer layer of the optic cup. It is continuous with the anterior myoepithelium of the iris anteriorly and with the pigmented epithelium of the retina posterior to the ora.
Capillaries from anterior arteriole are _____
Fenestrated, leak fluid, ions, and plasma proteins into the ciliary body stroma.
Capillaries from posterior arteriole are ________
Non-fenestrated, run in core of process.
Circular bundle of the ciliary muscle
Runs in a circle parallel to the pupil, near the major circle of the iris.
The three parts of the ciliary muscle
1. Longitudinal bundle 2. Radial bundle 3. Circular bundle
2 layers of ciliary epithelia
1. Pigmented ciliary epithelium, closest to the stroma. 2. Non-pigmented ciliary epithelium, closest to posterior chamber.
The layers of the ciliary body
1. Supraciliary space 2. Ciliary muscle- smooth muscle 3. Ciliary body stroma- loose connective tissue providing passage of blood vessels and nerves. 4. Ciliary epithelia
The ___ anterior ciliary arteries and the ___ long posterior ciliary arteries serve the iris and the cliary body, including the ciliary muscle.

IMC is served mostly by ____ with contribution from ____
ACAs ; LPCAs
Why are the two ciliary epithelial layers arranged apex to apex?
It is a result of folding of the optic vesicle into the bilayered optic cup.
MCA is served primarily by the ____ with contribution from ____
LPCAs ; ACAs
Longitudinal bundle of ciliary muscle
Layer closest to the sclera. Fibers originate from clusters of tendons anchoring into the inner surface of the sclera in the pars plana region (epichoroidal starts). Read slide 6.
2 parts of the ciliary body
Pars Plicata and Pars Plana.
Ciliary body band
Portion above the iris, at the anterior chamber
Zonule Occludens is found at what portion of ciliary epithelial cells?
The apical antero-lateral surface
The anterior ciliary arteries and long posterior ciliary arteries contribute to....
Two, discontinuous circles, the intramuscular circle and the major circle of the iris.
Ciliary Muscle is all _____ smooth muscle with no _____. What is the Ciliary muscle innervated by?
multi-unit ; no gap junctions ; Ciliary muscle is innervated by post-ganglionic parasympathtic fibers that run with CN III and synapse in the ciliary ganglion.
