Circulatory System Part 1 Review
circulatory system
- body system that consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood - also called cardiovascular system
aorta
- the largest artery in the body -pumps blood high in oxygen from the left ventricle out to the body
3 functions of the cardiovascular system
1. Delivering oxygen and nutrients to body cells. 2. Removing waste products from body cells. 3. Fighting pathogens/disease (white blood cells)
3 parts of the circulatory system
1. heart 2. blood vessels 3. blood
heart
a hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body
arteries
blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart and most carry blood high in oxygen
veins
blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart and most carry blood low in oxygen
red blood cells
disk-shaped cells that carry oxygen
ventricle
each of the two lower chambers of the heart that pumps blood out of the heart
atrium
each of the two upper chambers of the heart that receives blood that comes into the heart
white blood cells
help to fight off foreign invaders/pathogens
platelets
part of the blood that helps the blood clot
pulmonary arteries
the arteries in the body that carry blood low in oxygen
plasma
the liquid part of the blood
left side
the side of the heart that pumps blood high in oxygen to the body
right side
the side of the heart that pumps blood low in oxygen to the lungs
pulmonary veins
the veins in the body that carry blood high in oxygen
capillaries
tiny blood vessels where substances are exchanged between the blood and the body cells
function of the heart
to act as a pump to send blood throughout the body.
function of capillaries
to exchange of materials such as oxygen & carbon dioxide between the blood and body cells.
inferior vena cava
vein entering the right atrium that brings in blood from the lower part of the body
superior vena cava
vein entering the right atrium that brings in blood from the upper part of the body
