Grassroots Movement

A movement that is driven by the community's politics. (think about save Gilson Beach, ending water bottle sales in cafeteria at HMS, starting composting at all D39 schools, etc.)

Nonviolent Protest

A practice of achieving demands through symbolic protests, civil disobedience, and other methods, without using violence.

Civil Disobedience

A refusal to obey rules, laws, or someone in authority in a peaceful, nonviolent form of protest.

Protest

A statement or action expressing disapproval of something (usually rules or laws).

Passive Action

Not participating actively in a protest/demonstration, but still expressing disapproval of something. (think wearing a sticker, putting a sign in your yard, placing a bumper sticker on your car, wearing a t-shirt with your opinion written on it, etc.)

Why do people engage in civil disobedience?

They believe a rule or law is unfair/unjust

Injustice

Lacking fairness or justice (think unfair or unequal).

What are some benefits of civil disobedience?

Others might get involved to help the cause, it might bring awareness to the issue/injustice, it might get the government's or boss' attention that rules/laws need to be changed, it could get the rules/laws to be changed so that things are fairer for ALL people.

What are some costs involved with civil disobedience?

People might get hurt, arrested, put in jail, fired from their job, intimidated by others who disagree with their position, teased/heckled, etc.

Direct Action

Use of strikes, demonstrations, boycotts, and other forms of public protest to achieve demands.
