They considered themselves the holy ones of Israel. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees' tendency to give more importance to the letter of the added rules and regulations than to the spirit of God's law.

The Poor and The Outcast

Jesus mingled with the poor and the outcast. The majority of the people during His time were poor and considered outcasts of society. To the Pharisees, they were the "rabble of society" who knew nothing of the law. In contrast, Jesus called the poor and the outcast "the little ones" or "the lost sheep of Israel" to whom would be the Good Shepherd.

Jewish Prayer Life

Jesus observed the Jewish prayer life. The Jews offered prayers of praise to God three times a day: in the morning, at three o'clock in the afternoon, and in the evening.

Tax Collector

Jesus scandalized the Pharisees by eating with the tax collectors, who were considered "public sinners" and were the most despised in the society. They are also called "publicans" commonly abused their power by bribing and imposing exorbitant tax rates on the people to enrich themselves. Matthew was a tax collector.

Levites, Priests, and High Priests The priests instructed the people based on the religious ceremonial law and pronounced blessings upon them. They were also tasked to discover, diagnose and cure certain diseases such as leprosy.

PALESTINE during Jesus' Time

Palestine - "Philistine Land" - Palestine was tense. The Jews were under Roman rule. They suffered from heavy taxation from both the Romans and the local Jewish leaders.

Samaritan

Parable of the Good Samaritan Samaritans and Jews were hostile to one another. Samaritans were considered impure by the Jews because they had intermarried with pagans. By making the Samaritan the hero of the parable, Jesus was overturning the Jewish society's norms and priority. Jesus put responding to the needs of others, even of one's enemies as the top priority.
