Cleaning and Packing a Wound

Apply Sterile dressing and cover with ABD pad (Blue line away from wound) Apply tape to secure dressing in place or secure with Montombery Straps. If wound is covered you can touch the tape.
Pre Task - For a Shallow Wound/Deep Wound
Apply gauze as single layer directly into the wound surface. - Deep, gently pack dressing into wound.

Dispose of Supplies. Remove Gloves and Goggles.

Don Clean Gloves

Gently Pack Dressing into wound by hand or by using forceps until all wound surgaces are in contact with the wound bed. If tunneling is present, use a cotton tipped applicator to place gauze into tunneled area. Be sure moist Gauze does not touch the surrounding area. Do not over pressure wound. Leave tail exposed for easy removal.

Gently wring out excess saline solution from one of the moistened gauze sponges. Unfold and twist to make a packing strip. Let Patient know we are going to begin.

Using Clean Technique, place drain sponge around wound drain.
