Receiver

target of the message

Noise

term describing anything which disrupts the communication process.

Message

thought, idea, opinion, etc. which the sender has encoded and wants conveyed

Glittering Generalities

- Propaganda characterized by using important sounding words in a general statement, which has no true meaning and cannot be proved or disproved. Common words used are: "good," "fair" and "best"

Bandwagon

- Propaganda using the approach encouraging someone to believe, because everyone else is doing something, they should too, and if they do not, they will be left out. ThIs the most commonly used technique of propaganda.

Passive Communication

- communication style characterized by not reacting, standing up or being noticed and avoiding confrontation.

Aggressive Communication

- communication style characterized by the use of manipulation to achieve an end goal.

Assertive Communication

- communication style characterized by trying to reach a mutually agreed upon solution by creating an atmosphere where others can express themselves to reach a common solution; "broken record"

Passive-Aggressive Communication

- communication style which is characterized by the desire to avoid conflict but still manipulates the situation to meet the end goal

Propaganda

- ideas or facts which are a part of someone's cause; is used to damage the opposing cause

Non-Verbal Communication

- messages sent through body language and facial expressions

Either/Or Fallacy

- propaganda characterized the idea by presenting an idea with only two choices— either for or against.

Active Listening

- type of listening where the listener provides feedback to the speaking according to the information received

Passive Listening

- type of listening which involves the listener taking in information with little to no outward reaction

Sender

Individual or group who sends or originates the message

Decoding

Process of mentally processing a message

Transmitting

Process of selecting the appropriate channel of communication for message delivery

Thinking

Process where the source or sender generates the information intended to be shared with others.

Feedback

Response of the receiver to the message

Encoding

The process of transforming information to be conveyed into a transferable form.

The way in which a message is conveyed
