Older Americans Nutrition Program, formerly known as the Elderly Nutrition Program (ENP); 1965; DHHS, AOA

Purpose(s): Improve the dietary intakes and nutrition status of participating older adults and to offer them opportunities to form new friendships and create informal support networks.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program/ SNAP (formerly Food Stamp Program); 1961; USDA, Food and Nutrition Service (FNS)

Purpose(s): Improve the diets of low-income households by increasing access to food/ food-purchasing ability.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program(CSFP); 1969; USDA, FNS

Purpose(s): Improve the quality and affordability of daycare for low-income families by providing nutritious meals and snacks to children and to adults who receive care in nonresidential adult daycare centers, providing meals to children residing in homeless shelters, and providing snacks and suppers to youth participating in eligible after-school care programs.

SNAP Nutrition Education (SNAP-Ed, in some states called Family Nutrition Program); 1986; USDA, FNS

Purpose(s): Increase the likelihood that those eligible for SNAP benefits will make healthful choices on a limited budget and choose active lifestyles consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Purpose(s): Increase the school readinessof young children in low-income households. Also, to promote healthy prenatal outcomes, enhance the development of infants and toddlers, and foster healthy family functioning.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP); 2002; USDA, FNS

Purpose(s): Introduce children to fresh fruits and vegetables. The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 authorized the pilot program, and the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 (Farm Bill) amended the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act by adding the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable program, allowing for the nationwide expansion of the program.

Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR); 1976; USDA, FNS

Purpose(s): Provide commodity foods and nutrition education to improve the dietary quality of low-income households, including older adults, living on Indian reservations, and of Native American families residing in designated areas near reservations.

WIC Farmers' Market Nutrition Program; 1992; USDA, FNS

Purpose(s): Provide fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits and vegetables to WIC recipients and expand the awareness, use of, and sales at farmers' markets.

Purpose(s): Provide incentives to states and tribes for the efficient delivery of nutritious meals to older adults.

Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); 1972; USDA, FNS

Purpose(s): Safeguard the health of low- income women, infants, and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care.

Purpose(s): Supplement the diets of low-income needy persons, including older adults, by providing them with emergency food and nutrition assistance.

Food Distribution Disaster Assistance (Food Assistance in Disaster Situations); 1977; USDA, FNS (Disaster Feeding Situations are administered by DHS's Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA].)

Purpose(s): Supply food to disaster relief organizations such as the Red Crossand the Salvation Army for mass feedingor household distribution in a disaster situation such as a storm, earthquake, civil disturbance, or flood.

Purpose(s): Support American agricultural producers by providing cash reimbursements for meals served in schools; provide nutritious, USDA-purchased food for the NSLP, CACFP, and SFSP.
