Should you wash a windshield while the hood is up?
No
If nitrogen is present, do we add 3 PSI to the pressure listed on the door?
No. We instead ask the customer if they would like us to top off their tires with air. If they say yes, we fill them to the exact PSI indicated on the door.
What is the difference between OEM and aftermarket parts?
OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer A new vehicle straight off of the lot comes with all OEM parts. For example, a new Ford Mustang is made of ONLY genuine Ford parts. Likewise, a new Chevy Camaro is made of ONLY genuine GM parts. Any off-brand parts (such as wheels/rims/hubcaps) that are purchased and installed on the vehicle are called aftermarket parts.
Why is washing the windshield such an important aspect of the oil change?
This is the only part of the service that the customer can see. It is NOT to be taken lightly.
What is TPMS?
Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Why do we check to see if the vehicle has rear wiper blades?
To inform the customer if it is torn or needs to be replaced.
Why do we check for excessive wear?
To inform the customer of a possible safety issue.
Why is the rainbow method used?
To prevent streaks.
Why do we keep one hand on the wiper at all times?
To prevent the arm from falling and cracking the windshield.
Do we check tires with nitrogen in them?
Yes
How do we know how much air to put in the tires?
1st location: Door Jamb + 3psi 2nd Location: Computer + 3psi 3rd Location: Max PSI on tire -5 psi
What does blue tape on the perimeter of a windshield indicate?
This indicates the windshield has recently been replaced. The glue may not be dry yet. we will not wash this windshield.
Under what circumstances wouldn't you wash a windshield?
1. When blue tape is present. 2. When there is severe damage to the windshield, such that you might make the damage worse if you try to clean it. 3. If the customer requests that we not wash it.
Why is it important to call out any and all out of line conditions?
Any out of line condition could become a potential claim. If we do not comment these on the work order, as to determine the condition was pre-existing on arrival, we could be held liable.
If there is damage to only one tire on a customer's car, what should you do?
Check the remaining tires and fill them to the proper level as long as there is no damage, then notify Service Writer that the tires are N/A.
How do you identify nitrogen filled tires?
Green (or sometimes blue) caps or N2 written on cap.
If a customer has aftermarket rims or tires, how do we determine the tire pressure?
First ask the customer if they have a specific pressure they want in the tires. If not, locate the Max PSI then subtract 5 PSI.
Why do we add 3 PSI to a tire on a vehicle?
The manufacturer recommends we check tires cold. We are not able to do so. We add 3 PSI because we are checking a hot tire. When the tire cools, it will be at the manufacturer's recommendation.
Why is the use of aluminum valve stem caps problematic?
The tire cap and the valve stem can fuse together. This will make removing the cap difficult. If we force the cap off, the valve stem could break.
How do we identify aftermarket rims or tires?
They are typically identified by the manufacturer's logo on the rim or hubcap. Aftermarket wheels/hubcaps will have a different logo than the vehicle manufacturer's logo.
If the spare tire is on the outside of the vehicle, do we check it?
Yes, if it is easily accessible and not covered. Always subtract 5 PSI from the number indicated on the sidewall of the spare tire.
If nitrogen tires are low, do we add air to them?
Yes, if the customer OKs it.
