Do you have to include objective section?

optional goes right below your name and contact information at the top of the Resume. It needs to be specific and tailored toward the position to which you are applying. Vague and generic Objective sections are not impressive. Also, be sure to focus on what you can offer the company and not on what they can do for you.

Summary and references sections

optional therefore can be left out to make room for more important content. They are typically space fillers. If you include a References section, be sure to have 2-3 references. Do not just list one Reference. Remember these are space fillers and can be left off so that you have space to convey education, experience and awards.

some general requirements for resume?

1 Write clearly, concisely, and so that the resume is easy to read 2 Ensure your resume is free of spelling and grammatical errors 3 Make sure all the information is true and accurate 4 Make sure your resume has eye appeal with attractive lay-out, headings, and use of space. It should look professional. 5 Organize the resume in such a way that it can be read in 20-30 seconds 6 Do not include sentences or paragraphs (except in Objective section) 7 Use bullet points 8 Begin each bullet or telegraphic phrase with action words specific to what you did. Action words are active verbs. Check out the Action Word List in this Unit's materials 9 Keep the verbal tense consistent under each position (every bullet is past tense or every bullet is present tense) 10 Ensure that under each job, the bullets also have consistent wording 11 Include no negative information 12 Keep at 1 page, 10 to 14 font 13 Don't include "I" in your resume. It's obvious that the resume is about you, and you waste a lot of space by including "I" throughout your resume. Here is an example from The Winning Resume (Williams, p.16) "Instead of saying 'I was in charge of new employee safety training' say 'Responsible for the safety training of new employees.'"

At the top of the Resume?

1. Include your name, phone number, and e-mail at the top of the resume (including your address is only optional these days especially if you are willing to relocate). If you have an impressive, well-developed LinkedIn profile, you can include that link. 2. Be sure to use a professional e-mail address, not a suggestive or inappropriate email address such as "[email protected]"

Keep two things in mind as you write or update resume?

1. Tailor your resume towards the position to which you are applying by including and emphasizing your education, experience and skills that fit that particular position. This is why professionals often have many versions of their Resume. 2. Ensure that the content on your resume is true and accurate.

Other info to include

Paid and unpaid experience such as internships and volunteer experience. Sometimes paid and volunteer experiences are combined under the heading "Relevant Experience" or"Experience" in lieu of an "Employment" section. Honors and Awards. This can be a separate section if you have them. If you are an official member, list Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology because this is the honor society for psychology majors. Bilingual, fluent, conversational and in what language (Spanish is always sought after; many other languages are valued depending on the region/local need). Do not bury this skill in a bunch of filler. Make sure it is noticeable on the resume. Being fluent in English is understood. Leave that off. Involvement in Activities, Organizations, Membership/Affiliations with professional associations. These may be included at the end of a resume under an affiliation or activities and honors section. If you have longer employment and education sections, don't feel the need to include an affiliation or activities section. The employment and education sections are much more important Relevant Certifications. For example, CPR Certification and sometimes Food Handling Certification are valued for psychiatric technician and inpatient psychiatric positions.
