Differences between PASSIVE AND ACTIVE IMMUNITY🧡
How quickly does each take to develop?
- Passive Immunity is acquired immediately - Active Immunity takes time to develop
Examples
- passive : anti venom given to victims of snake bite . Immunity acquired by fetus when antibodies are passed on from placenta from the mother - Active Immunity : Natural Immunity when individual becomes infected under normal circumstances and produces antibodies and may continue to do so for many years. Also active immunity which forms basis of vaccinations
Length of time it lasts for
- passive immunity is short lasting immunity because once the antibodies are broken down inside the individuals own body they cannot be replaced because the individuals is not producing them themselves as hey have come from an outside source - Active Immunity is longer lasting because individual immune system is stimulates in response to an antigen or pathogen they produce antibodies and may continue to do so for a long time. As the antibodies are being produced by the individuals own immune system they can be replaced
Define each
- passive immunity is the immunity acquired by an individual when antibodies are introduced into their body from an outside source without contact with disease pathogens or antigens - Active immunity is the immunity stimulated when an individual own immune system produces antibodies in response to contact with disease pathogens and antigens
