reasonable excuse/explanation for behavior to avoid the real reason
compensation
substitution of ones goal for another goal to achieve success
displacement
transferring feelings about one person to someone else. individuals cannot direct the feelings towards the person responsible
repression
transfers unacceptable painful idea, feelings, and thoughts into the unconscious mind. the individual is not aware and forgets what happened bc it was too painful and scary
