Lateral recumbency (reclining) restraint

1. After lifting the dog onto the table, place the dog on its side 2. Stand behind the dog so that the dog's spine is against the front of your body 3. Grasp the dog's forelegs with one hand, securing your grip by placing one finger between the legs 4. Press down slightly with your forearm on the base of the dog's neck. Use your other hand to grasp the dog's rear legs

Sternal recumbancy

1. Have the dog sit next to you. Place one arm around the dogs neck for control 2. Raise two front legs up to slide the dog into laying position

Sitting restraint

1. Place your arm around the dog's hindquarters 2. Gently tuck the dog into a sitting position 3. Place your other arm around the dog's neck so that its head rests in the crook of your elbow 4. Pull the dog snugly against your body

Jugular

1. Stand alongside the dog and place your right hand under its muzzle. 2. Point the dog's head toward the ceiling. You may have to hold the dog's mouth closed with your hand 3. With your left hand, grasp the dog's front legs just above the feet and hold them together. Secure your grip by placing a finger between them 4. Pull the feet slightly to align them with the dog's nose. The venipuncturist will normally occlude the vein without further assistance 5. Once the procedure is finished, apply pressure to the venipuncture site.

Cephalic

1. Stand at the side of the table, facing in the same direction as the dog. 2. Grasp the dog under its neck so that its head rests in the crook of one elbow 3. Place your other arm across the dog's back and pull the dog snugly against your body 4. Extend the same arm to grasp the dog's opposite forelimb at elbow level with your right hand. 5. Hold the forelimb at the elbow and use your thumb to occlude the vein by pressing in and slightly to the side 6. Maintain your grasp on the leg and simply lift your thumb straight off it. Place your thumb over the injection site while applying pressure. Continue to hold the dog firmly.

Cat burrito

1. Start by placing your cat several inches from the front edge of the towel, about a foot in from one side. 2. Wrap the short side of the towel snugly around your cat's body 3. Pull the short side of the towel over your cat, so that her entire body is covered, except for the face 4. Pull the front edge of the towel forward, which will wrap under your cat's neck. 5. Once the towel is wrapped all the way around, grab the other side and pull it over your cat, making sure that it's snugly in place.

Femoral venipuncture (cat)

1. Take the scruff of the cat's neck in one hand, grasping as much of the loose skin as possible along the neck. Grasp high up between the ears, or the cat may be able to turn her head and bite. 2. Wrap the fingers of the other hand around and through the cat's hind legs. 3. Gently stretch the cat out by separating your hands. Brace the cat's back and neck firmly against your forearm. The hand holding the hind legs can then be used to hold the top leg and tail out of the way, while the person performing the veinipuncture pulls out on the leg closer to the table. 4. Pressure placed vertically on the inner thigh will occlude and raise the femoral vein.

Standing restraint

1.Place one hand in front of the dog's neck 2.Place the other hand under the dog's abdomen just in front of its rear legs 3. Gently pull the dog toward you until it's snug against your body
